What will Sony announce at MWC 2013? The money's on a UK Xperia Tablet Z launch, but there are other possibilities too
Sony is expected to showcase its Xperia Tablet Z with waterproofing, up-to-date Android build and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor.
While technically the Xperia Tablet Z has already been launched, Sony has been keeping quiet about availability outside of Japan, so we’re hoping to hear about a UK release at the show.
It’s likely the similarly specced Xperia Z flagship smartphone will also make another appearance and perhaps with an emphasis on how it can interact with the tablet. It features a stunning 5-inch 443 pixel-per-inch display, a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera and the new Sony UI on top of Android Jelly Bean.
Allegedly the company will also have a mid-range Xperia SP, previously codenamed the Hua Shan or C530X, which will feature a 4.5-inch 720p display and a Qualcom S4 Snapdragon dual-core MSM8960T processor at 1.7GHz with an Adreno 320 GPU.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be onboard along with the new Sony UI seen on the Xperia Z and it’s believed there will be a 4G variant, though which market it’s aimed at is, as yet, unclear.
Leaked pictures from earlier in the year suggest Sony may also be working on a 6.4-inch Xperia smartphone or ‘phablet’ but nothing is known in terms of spec and features. Could this be a stylus-driven competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Note brand?
Sony also recently announced its new PlayStation 4 console and some of the new features cross over into the mobile space. It’s quite possible we’ll see more information on cross-platform gaming capabilities between Sony phones and its PlayStation hardware, software and ecosystem.
In particular, Sony is known to have acquired cloud gaming service Gaikai i 2012. There was a lot of cloud gaming talk at CES 2013 in January, much of it coming from Nvidia’s GRID, so it’ll be interesting to see if Sony is moving forward in this area.
