EE has announced it is doubling its 4G network speed and claims average speed for users will be over 20Mbps.
The upgrade plan will see the double-speed network hitting ten of EE’s existing 4G cities in the Summer, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield.
This isn’t going to be any kind of pay extra, higher-tier service either - the rollout will immediately affect existing EE 4G users in double-speed 4G areas regardless of their tariff.
EE’s broader target is still to reach one million UK customers with its 4G network by the end of 2013.
‘Doubling of 4G network capacity ensures UK’s fastest mobile network is future-proofed to meet needs of data hungry consumers and businesses, with EE forecasting network traffic to increase by 750% in next three years alone,’ said EE.
EE is doubling its 1800MHz 4G spectrum bandwidth from 10MHz to 20MHz
‘This will give 4GEE customers increased capacity, and access to some of the fastest mobile speeds in the world, reinstating the UK as a leader in mobile and digital communications,’ said the company.
Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE said: ‘We are ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of the digital revolution. Having already pioneered 4G here, we’re now advancing the country’s infrastructure again with an even faster, even higher-capacity network, and at no extra cost to our customers.’
He added that since the introduction of 4G to the UK the company has noticed a difference in the way customers on the network use their smartphones compared to existing 3G users.
Swantee said video now accounts for 24 per cent of all smartphone traffic on 4G and other services such as navigation and mapping, cloud-based services and even users buying goods online via their phones have all seen similar increases in activity.
‘Mobile users in the UK have a huge appetite for data-rich applications, and this will only grow as people become more familiar with and reliant upon next generation technologies and services. Our double speed 4G network will provide developers with the quality and speeds needed to develop the next wave of killer 4G apps. Whatever innovations they come up with, we’re ready,’ he said.
