Apple’s iPhone 5 is a more durable phone than Samsung’s Galaxy S4 when it comes to the kind of heavy impact caused by drops, a test video has revealed.
We’ve criticised Samsung’s plasticky build quality before and quite often will see protests that the polycarbonate is far more durable than aluminium and glass. Quite apart from the fact our ire is more to do with the aesthetics and tactile feel, it would seem this allegation regarding the phone being hardier is actually incorrect anyway.
The Youtube video from TechSmartt shows three different drop tests on concrete: from the hip, chest height and above the head. From pocket-height and chest-height both phones only suffered a few scuffs.
However, in the overhead drop test Samsung’s Galaxy S4 had a cracked display. It was still operational, but looking a bit worse for wear than the iPhone 5 which still didn’t appear to be any more damaged than the lower height drops.
Presumably because the film-makers wanted to destroy something beautiful, they then went on to perform a 10 foot drop test which the iPhone 5 still came out of relatively unscathed. The Samsung Galaxy S4 bought the farm though with the screen shattering, the camera also broke and the phone ceased to function moments later.
To push things even further, a second 10 foot drop for the iPhone 5 still left it undamaged and even running it over with a car didn’t cause it any issues.
The Galaxy S4 seems to be more durable than its predecessor, surviving drops that would have killed the Galaxy S3, but the iPhone 5 appears to be an incredibly robust device especially considering it’s not something Apple makes much of a song and dance about.
Fundamentally, however, both phones survived the most important tests – the pocket-height and chest-height drops which are the most realistic scenarios for most smartphone users.
