Apple's iPhone 5S will have an improved FaceTime camera with HD video capture and dual-shot

Apple’s next-gen iPhone 5S could have an upgraded 2-megapixel front-facing camera to improve FaceTime calls, but may also feature a dual-shot mode similar to its Samsung Galaxy S4 rival.

According to iOSDoc, which allegedly spoke to an anonymous Apple software engineer, the iPhone 5S will be the debut handset for iOS 7 and the dual-shot feature will be built into the software.

Despite being implemented at the software level, the source said the dual-shot feature will only be present on the iPhone 5S (and presumably subsequent models), users upgrading to iOS 7 won’t get it on their old iPhones.

However, the engineer also added that the feature is still in beta and may not make the iPhone 5S launch in time – they said that if this happens it would be introduced in iOS 7.1 later. The source also pointed out iOS 7 would be announced at WWDC 2013 in June.

Previously an iPhone 5S launch was expected for the June-July period but multiple reports have indicated Apple may delay its announcements until the Autumn. iOSDoc’s engineer seems to be suggesting otherwise.

Dual-shot has appeared on both Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and LG’s Optimus G Pro and it’s a pretty neat feature allowing both the front and rear cameras to capture image or video simultaneously. So far we’ve seen it paired with software suites which allow you to edit the images or footage together.

The report says the iPhone 5S’s front-facing camera will be able to record Full HD video footage. Such an update will bring Apple’s camera hardware in-line with Samsung’s flagships which now feature 1.9-megapixel and 2-megapixel secondary front-facers.

The move seems to be part of a growing trend for phone manufacturers, which are increasingly adding extra software-level camera features, editing suites and other capabilities to make cameras easy to use and share from.
