The iPhone 5S will reportedly hit production this quarter in order to hit a scheduled Q2 (summer) release date, according to reports. The company is also believed to be prepping a cheaper model for launch too.
The news comes via the Wall Street Journal’s sources, adding weight to what many already expected. The WSJ does not name sources, but confirms production will soon begin with a view to get the handset out by the summer.
‘The Journal offered no indication as to whether an ‘iPhone 5S’ might include a fingerprint sensor underneath the home button for secure transactions,’ reports Apple Insider.
‘Those claims were first made in January by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who has a strong track record in predicting Apple's future product pipeline.’
The cheaper iPhone model is said to feature a 4-inch display and use a new type of casing, one presumably constructed from cheaper materials - perhaps plastic. It’s also unclear whether the handset will feature a Retina Display.
The WSJ expects the cheaper iPhone to be targeted at markets like Brazil and China.
The report did not mention whether the iPhone 5S will feature a new display, many reports have alluded to the inclusion of a 4.2-inch setup, or whether Apple plans on changing the overall design of the handset.
The iPhone 5S is believed to feature a Full HD display, Apple’s new A7 chipset, and Jony Ive’s re-imagined iOS 7. Additional reports from last month claim iOS 7 is starker and simpler than preceding efforts from the company.
The plot thickens...
