Motorola’s X Phone may be available in more than 20 colour variants according to the latest rumours.
Phonearena cites an anonymous source at the Google-owned manufacturer who claims that despite Motorola advisor Guy Kawaski’s recent comments about car-like phone customisation you won’t be able to pick different display sizes, RAM or build material.
But the car analogy is actually fairly apt because the source also says there will be a wide range of colour choices, more than 20, in fact.
At present, Nokia and HTC offer a decent number of colour variants for their Windows Phone handsets. You also get an occasional brightly hued model from manufacturers, such as Sony’s purple Xperia Z and BlackBerry’s red Z10. Apple’s next iPhone is rumoured to be coming in an iPod-like range of colours, which would probably mean about five or six choices.
With 20 variants though, Motorola is outgunning every other phone-maker on consumer choice with a veritable rainbow.
Not much else is known about the X Phone at this stage, it’s said to have a 4.7-inch 1080p display and Android 4.2, but that’s about as far as it goes. It also looks as though the device won’t be appearing at Google I/O in May as was previously believed as a new rumour says we’ll have to wait until August at the very earliest.
Previously, a Google executive commented that the company was not ‘wowed’ by Motorola’s current product pipline but added that existing projects needed clearing before more innovative devices would appear. It’s not clear whether the Motorola X represents part of Motorola’s pre-planned portfolio that Google was talking about or if it’s the new generation of products developed under closer scrutiny from the Android giant.
Reports would suggest the latter, although it’s been made very clear that the phone will launch under Motorola’s own branding rather than using the Google Nexus brand.
Not only is a big range of colours a substantial turn-around for Motorola but we hope it has a knock-on effect on Google too. Nexus devices are good but they could do with a lick of paint as well as it’s all just been shades of black and grey with the occasional obligatory white model up to this point.
