Samsung has announced its Galaxy Tab 3, a 7-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Tab 3 as a 7-inch tablet with a dual-core processor.

Many were expecting a larger 10-inch form factor, but it makes sense that Samsung is going for the now-popular 7-inch size.

Samsung says it has narrowed the bezel and deliberately designed the device to be as portable and easy-to-use in one hand as possible. We’d hope this’d mean it’s fairly lightweight. Also, we were impressed with how svelte and light the Galaxy Note 8.0 was.

The processor is a 1.2GHz dual-core chip and there are options for either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, plus microSD capability for up to a further 64GB. The battery is a 4,000mAh unit, there is a 3-megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.3-megapixel secondary on the front for video calls.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is onboard, of course with the TouchWiz UI layered on top. Samsung’s release info is actually fairly sparse on the details, so we’re not sure what extra features the Galaxy Tab 3 might have. We’d hazard a guess that there might be the Multiscreen feature as seen on the Galaxy Note range and other devices.

The LCD display has a WSVGA resolution at 1024x600, giving a pixel density of around 169 pixels-per-inch (ppi). Samsung hasn’t said anything about pricing or availability but judging by the spec we think there’s a good chance this will be Samsung’s contribution to the affordable 7-inch tablet, joining the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and its ilk.

A Wi-Fi only model will hit first at an unspecified point in May with a 3G variant following in June. The 3G model will reportedly be able to make calls like the Galaxy Note 8.0. There’s no mention of a 4G model, again suggesting the low-cost bracket is a consideration.
