Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 leaked

Specs have leaked online for Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 devices

Details of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 3 tablet have leaked online.

According to the leak, which comes via Greek site techblog.gr, the device will be announced ‘in the coming days’. The 3G/HSPA+ models are expected to hit the market in May while 4G versions will arrive in June/July.

There’s no source cited for the information, so there’s no vouching for its authenticity. The report claims there will be two different size variants for the Galaxy Tab 3, a 10.1-inch model and an 8-inch version.

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will feature Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. There are no additional processor details but we suspect this is the Cortex-A15 Exynos 5250 found in the Nexus 10. The device is reported to have 1GB of RAM, which sounds suspiciously low to us.

The 10.1-inch display will have a 1280x800 pixel resolution, which we estimate would give a pixel density of 149 pixels-per-inch (ppi), however, it’s not known what kind of display technology is being used.

The camera setup is sounding fairly inconsequential – a 1.3-megapixel front-facer and a 3-megapixel rear-facing primary.

There’ll be 16GB of onboard memory plus microSD, we would guess this would be for cards up to 64GB, but we’re a little surprised not to see 32GB and 64GB internal storage variants too. The battery is a 7,000mAh unit and the whole device will be 8.7mm thick and weighs 533g.

The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 has a similar setup, although it’s listed as having 2GB of RAM. Built-in storage isn’t listed at all and the display has the same resolution as its larger counterpart which would clock in at 188ppi. The 8-inch model is thinner at 6.95mm, lighter at 330g and has a smaller battery at 4,500mAh.

On the whole this shared spec seems rather sensible, which makes us think the source is probably legitimate. We do think there’s been some miscommunication in the details, however, as that would explain the discrepancy between the RAM and storage across both specs.

Increasingly though, it’s becoming difficult to see the point of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab range when the Galaxy Note models do much the same thing but with the addition of an excellent stylus and other perks like multiscreen mode.

A significant difference in price from the Galaxy Note models could convince us otherwise though.

We’d also add our initial impression, based purely on the specs of course, is to question why on earth anyone would bother with the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 when the 8-inch model offers much the same spec but with a sharper display and a lighter, thinner and more portable frame.

Fake? Legitimate? Ultimately pointless? Or, actually not a bad package? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
