Sony is said to be prepping two new flagship devices, according to leaked information. The C670X Honami smartphone and C680X Togari phablet could be some of the company’s most serious contenders for the smartphone space to date.
Details have emerged via XperiaBlog which alleges both handsets will hit the market in the second half of 2013. The codenames are apparently not new and have been heard of before and it’s been established for a while that the Togari will be the larger of the pair.
The new information comes from a range of sites and sources based in Asia with someone claiming to be a Sony Xperia tester posting on a forum.
The Togari phablet, which would be a first for Sony, will have a 6.44-inch touch display with a Full HD 1080p resolution, this could give a pixel density as high as 342 pixels-per-inch (ppi) – remarkably sharp for such a large panel.
Reportedly there will be similarities to the Xperia Z with a thin profile and glass back panel and so far a white coloured variant has been spotted. There’s some suggestion this device might land in Japan first in July. Whether an international model would follow isn’t clear.
The Honami will be the leading flagship to pick up where the Xperia Z left off. According to the details Sony is attempting to remould its brand under the ‘One Sony’ moniker so you can expect its broader range of electronic devices, including phones, to continue having similar aesthetics and features.
The flagship will have either a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display, just like the Xperia Z or a 4.8-inch one at 459ppi. Nothing’s been said on the subject for either phone but you can bet we’ll see the Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2 on both handset displays.
The Honami’s could also use IPS White Magic LCD technology. Sony will include a dedicated Walkman-branded audio chip inside the Honami, which could be the S-Master MX Digital Amplifier.
Meanwhile for the camera Sony is said to be really leveraging its long-standing expertise and going toe-to-toe with Nokia with either a 16-megapixel or 20-megapixel Cyber-shot CMOS sensor fitted with a Carl Zeiss lens and both dual-LED and Xenon flash.
This will allegedly use similar oversampling functionality to the Nokia PureView 808 and could provide lossless zoom capability. However, there are some rumours saying the phone will simply have a 13-megapixel shooter. We know what we’d rather believe.
Historically Sony’s handsets have been a step or two behind the competition when it comes to processor tech. Not so with the Honami, it will reportedly be one of the first to market with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip, which will be clocked at 2.3GHz with an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU) and 2GB of RAM. The battery is pegged as being between 2,700mAh and 3,000mAh.
Reports indicate this phone might appear officially at industry expos as early as July and will probably launch in Asia shortly thereafter, while it’s said it will see a global launch it likely won’t be until August or September, with some pointing to IFA 2013 in Berlin and a release following, possibly in October.
Both handsets are believed to continue Sony’s new tradition of dust and waterproofing but it’s also thought that at least the Honami (and possibly the Togari too) will use what’s called ‘Triluminos’ display tech.
This is designed to produce more vivid and natural colours by use of an additional filter layer between the LED backlighting and the main panel.
Design-wise the Honami is said to be one of the most stunning phones Sony has ever created. We think there’s a good case for both phones sharing the same aesthetic if they represent Sony’s new breed of superphone.
All of this is may be fresh from the rumour mill but we’d still caution readers to take it with a pinch of salt. There are multiple sources corroborating on the subject, but there are some notable variations too. There could be a hoax source at the bottom of it all and there’s nothing to verify that the chap who says he’s a tester is actually one.
On the other hand, all of this would suggest that Sony is certainly cooking up something interesting and that we’ll probably hear more about it in the next few months. We’ll be sure to update you with more details as they emerge.
