Android 4.3 Key Lime Pie spotted in server logs

Google's next Android version will be 4.3 Key Lime Pie, according to web logs

A new version number of Android has been spotted in server logs as Android 4.3, throwing the supposed Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie expected for Google I/O this month into question.

The version number showed up in logs on Android Police, but Android Authority has also revealed it has the same version appearing in its own logs too.

It would appear that, if this is real, Google’s engineers are testing the builds on a range of phones as the logs show a Nexus 4, a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.

An unannounced Huawei handset also showed up with 4.3 and a phone from Pantech.

Interestingly the Pantech phone has a single-core 1GHz chip and 512MB of RAM, suggesting Google is planning this build to roll out across a wide range of devices running both old and new hardware at high and low specs.

Apparently the version running on the Pantech is branded as Android 4.3.1 and uses the Key Lime Pie name, but it’s not clear if this is a mistake.

For our 2p it’s looking pretty likely Key Lime Pie will be the codename for the next build and it’s not a huge leap for it to be version 4.3 instead of version 5.0. After all, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich wasn’t expected to be usurped by 4.1 Jelly Bean at the time, so incremental numeric changes aren’t necessarily indicative of whether an update is a landmark or not.

Google I/O is taking place on May 15 and there will be one three hour keynote presentation. Some have speculated this might mean we’ll only see a launch of Android Key Lime Pie and no new Nexus hardware, but we think feasibly Google might just be compressing its launch into a single presentation for multiple products.

We’ll be sure to bring you all the Google and Android news as it emerges.
