Apple has apparently boosted its testing phase of iOS 7 ahead of an expected reveal at WWDC 2013 in June as web traffic from devices running the new build from known Apple IP addresses has increased.
MacRumors and Onswipe have both reported significant increases in iOS 7 based site traffic with Onswipe noting 23 per cent of all its iOS traffic in May coming from iOS 7 devices in Cupertino and San Francisco. Around 75 per cent of this total was from iPhones while 25 per cent was from iPad tablets.
MacRumors has shown slight blips of iOS 7 activity throughout April but a large spike occurred towards the end of the month on April 29.
WWDC is expected to be the public debut of iOS 7 but it won’t be made available until it launches on a new device later in the year. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said the company will launch new hardware in the Autumn and many expect we’ll see the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 around August or September with mass production rumoured for June.
Component production is already said to be underway at Japanese LCD manufacturers and other Asian suppliers while Foxconn is said to have undertaken a massive recruitment drive signalling that the start of production is imminent.
Previously it was thought that the iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 would get a separate release from the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. Feasibly this could still occur later in the year in October, but with the earlier expected Summer launch of the iPhone now more or less out of the question we could see Apple’s hardware launches bunched closer together in late 2013.
It’s understood that iOS 7 will introduce a much cleaner interface after Apple appointed chief hardware designer Jony Ive as head of its software and interface division. Ive is said to have lead the re-design of iOS towards a ‘flatter’ aesthetic while preserving iOS’s conventional functionality.
