Could an LTE variant of the Nexus 4 show up at Google I/O?

Google's keynote address at Google I/O 2013 isn't far off and those anticipating a slew of Nexus devices mightn't be disappointed if internet rumours are anything to go by. Alongside a new Nexus 7 tablet and possible Nexus 5 smartphone a refreshed Nexus 4 is tipped to show up, potentially adding LTE connectivity and improved storage options.

We'll update this article as and when more details emerge, but until then, here's a closer look at the chances of a 4G Nexus 4 appearing and what it could bring should it have the wraps taken off later today.

Speculation about whether the Nexus 5 will launch at Google I/O hit fever pitch when UK retailers including Phones 4u and Carphone Warehouse withdrew the Nexus 4 from sale. However, whilst this might well signal the coming of a new Nexus, it could also indicate that an incremental update is about to materialise.

Of course, with 4G services in the UK monopolised by one network, the link between those retailers actions and the coming of an LTE-enabled Nexus 4 are tenuous at best. But, with 4G already alive and well in the US, it's not beyond the realms of fantasy to expect Google to cash-in and give its Nexus 4 a sprinkle of super-fast data connectivity.

In fact, the Nexus 4 already has a 4G LTE chip under the hood, it's just that it isn't utilised at present as Google wanted to 'make sure devices are available for every network on the planet'. As LTE standards vary from network to network, Google would have had to produce a bespoke device for each. And that'd be expensive.

Now though, as LTE services become more prevalent in lucrative territories such as western Europe - several UK operators are soon to join EE in offering 4G connections in the near future - it makes sense that Google take advantage and potentially snare more customers.

Other indicators that an LTE Nexus 4 is nigh include the impending launch of Android Key Lime Pie, and a white variant of the device being spied in the wild, most recently captured on video.

It's no secret that Google likes to debut new Android iterations free from any manufacturer skin and although the Nexus 5 would be the obvious choice to demo the platform, having two Key Lime Pie device out there simultaneously would do no harm. Meanwhile, the spotting of a white version ties in with Google's past form for releasing exclusive versions of existing devices with expanded functionality.

As mentioned, we'll update this article with Nexus 4 LTE details if and when they're made available, so check back here later today.
