Nokia is rolling out the Windows Phone 7.8 update to the year-old Nokia Lumia 900 bringing a boost to the phone’s interface design and some tweaks to the functionality.
The main change is the introduction of Windows Phone 8’s added Live Tile customisation – there are now up to three sizes of tile (this does depend on the app, however): small, medium and large. You’ve also got a slightly broader range of ‘Theme’ colour choices and the lock screen can be modified to update with images from your photo album, Bing’s picture of the day and a number of other feed options.
Allegedly Windows Phone 7.8 should also squeeze slightly better performance and optimisation out of your handset, but don’t expect a massive leap forward.
Lumia 900 users should see a prompt for the update appearing on their phones shortly, or you can try going into ‘Settings’, then ‘phone update’ and tap ‘check for updates’. It’s probably worth making sure you’re on a stable Wi-Fi connection first to avoid data charges over 3G, unless you’re on an unlimited data plan, of course.
The update will also allow you to update Nokia’s built-in app suite, including Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music to the latest versions.
The Nokia Lumia 900 is still a perfectly viable handset and the new update makes it even more so. It’s also relatively affordable compared to the current crop of new devices and can now be found for around £250 SIM-free. In our review we praised the build quality, display and battery life, but did find that like the new Lumia 920 flagship it is a bulkier handset.
However, with that said you can now get the slinkier Lumia 720 for around the same price with an excellent camera and full-blown Windows Phone 8.
