Nokia boss confirms manufacturer is investigating 'computational photography' functionality for forthcoming Lumia devices

Nokia's executive vice president of Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, has confirmed that the Finnish manufacturer is investigating computational imaging capabilities for inclusion in the next raft of Lumia smartphones.

Speaking in an interview with BGR.in, the exec added weight to speculation suggesting that Nokia is working on bringing impressive image capture functionalities to its upcoming devices:

'If you look at where imaging is going, computational imaging is an area of exploration,

'Being able to capture even more data — data you cannot even see with the human eye that you can only see by actually going back to the picture and being able to do things with them.'

Many have suggested that this could mean that Nokia is looking to bring Lytro-esque technologies - essentially functionality that allows users to manipulate the focus of an image once it has been captured - to its flagship Windows Phone handsets.

Harlow explained that limitations to computing power had previously prevented such functionality being incorporated into Nokia's Lumia devices but that 'changes in the processing capabilities of smartphones opens it up as an area of exploration.'

Whether these comments have any implications for the widely rumoured Nokia EOS remain to be seen but given Nokia's desire to find a point of difference in an increasingly competitive smartphone market, it isn't beyond comprehension for the technology to be incorporated in that device or any potential successor.
