Qualcomm, better known for its high-end processor chips, is looking to make its mark in the smartphone display sector too as the company has now showcased its Mirasol touchscreens to the world.
Qualcomm is currently enjoying a prolific period as the company’s processor chips are found in virtually all new smartphone handsets, but the Mirasol display will add another string to its bow.
Seen first-hand by Engadget, the Mirasol demonstration showed a 5.1-inch touchscreen with a 2560x1440 pixel resolution at 577 pixels-per-inch (ppi). Currently the best displays on the market hit between 440ppi and 470ppi and range from between 4.6-5-inches.
According to the report, Qualcomm’s Mirasol screen can boast six times the power efficiency of conventional LCD and OLED. While the picture is allegedly very sharp in the flesh, so to speak, it is said to be quite reflective with a ‘silvery tint’ and colour depth isn’t quite up there with the best of them.
Comparisons have been made with e-Ink screens and it’s reported the display doesn’t tire out your eyes as much as conventional solutions. Qualcomm is apparently basing Mirasol on certain light reflective properties found in nature, an approach dubbed ‘Biomimicry’.
With all that said, this tech is still very much in the early stages of development. Qualcomm made it clear that we won’t see Mirasol on commercial products for at least a year or two yet.
Qualcomm is also looking at other implementations of its display technologies which may arrive sooner and attendees at the company’s event saw a smartwatch with a 1.5-inch screen and what was described as an ‘always-on’ smartphone with a 1.5-inch display embedded in the back panel.
