Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could feature optical stabilisation

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 phablet may be packing a camera with optical image stabilisation

Samsung’s much-anticipated Galaxy Note 3 could be fitted with optical image stabilisation (OIS), allowing for much better quality pictures and video, according to reports.

Korea’s ETNews claims to have heard from Samsung insiders and originally the plan was to use a 3x optical zoom but apparently this was dropped as it made the device too thick.

It’s worth noting that the rumours around Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom suggest it’ll have a 10x zoom, so whether this new revelation is a sign that such a device is merely rumour and nothing more is debatable.

It could just be that for the Galaxy Note 3, being a second-rank flagship model of sorts behind the Galaxy S4, Samsung couldn’t afford to make compromises on bulk.

Certainly it didn’t do Nokia any favours with the Lumia 920, but as the subsequent Lumia 925 has shown, getting optical image stabilisation into a thin chassis is now plausible.

So, instead of the zoom, Samsung has gone for OIS for the Galaxy Note 3 phablet, which is also thought to sport a 5.9-inch display panel in a body no bigger than the Galaxy Note 2.

Such a move follows on from the Galaxy S4 and rumoured Galaxy S4 Mini which both have bigger displays than their predecessors in bodyshells of comparable size.

According to company executives who spoke to Korea Times earlier in the year, the Galaxy Note 3 is definitely heading to IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany, for its official launch this September, so don’t expect it to show up before then via anything but an unofficial leak.
