An official Samsung app update has not only confirmed the rumoured Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S4 Active models but has revealed a new Galaxy S4 Mega variant for the first time.
Samsung recently rolled out an update for its WatchOn TV control app, which allows the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 to use their infrared ports to control compatible TVs and view program schedules. Within the update’s ‘What’s new’ change log is a listing which reads:
‘Added support for upcoming S4 Mega, S4 Mini and S4 Active.’
The Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S4 Active (previously thought to be spelled ‘Activ’) are expected to appear around the end May, hitting shelves in June. So far they’ve only been rumoured though and this, assuming it’s not a hoax, looks like confirmation straight from Samsung.
We haven’t heard mention of a Galaxy S4 Mega until now, the only other handsets to bear that branding so far are the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the Galaxy Mega 5.9 (which hasn’t been scheduled for the UK market). Could this be a typo and it was meant to read Mega 6.3?
Possibly, the alternative is that Samsung is planning a larger Galaxy S4 model to accompany its smaller S4 Mini version and ruggedised S4 Active variant.
There is another spanner in the works though. Previous rumours have pointed to a Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, which is claimed to sport a high-end 16-megapixel camera with a 10x ‘optical’ zoom. Whether this device is real or just enthusiasm from the rumour mill isn’t clear, but it’s interesting that it has been omitted from Samsung’s software update. Perhaps the Galaxy S4 Zoom doesn’t exist.
Alternatively, it could be real and it’s simply that it doesn’t have IR capabilities, or another theory could be that it will actually be called the Galaxy S4 Mega.
It’s all a bit confusing at the moment, but if we hear any more we’ll be sure to update you with the latest details.
