In a press release, Samsung outlined the handset specs and features and revealed that both 4G LTE and 3G variants will be made available, though specific models for the UK are yet to be confirmed. Samsung did state that it will be showcasing the Galaxy S4 Mini at its June 20 event in London but has not yet revealed when the phone will hit stores and networks or given any ideas on pricing.
Described as a ‘powerful yet compact version’ of the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S4 Mini features a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED touchscreen inside a 124x61x8.94mm shell which weights 107g and features an ultra-thin bezel around the display.
Inside is a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM (believed to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400), 8GB of onboard storage (though 5GB is usable) plus microSD support for 64GB cards. The battery is a 1,900mAh unit and as well as call and data connectivity the phone has Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and infrared controls as well as NFC for the 4G model.
The camera is rated at 8-megapixels and there’s a 1.9-megapixel front-facing secondary. The Galaxy S4 Mini shares the Galaxy S4’s camera features including Sound & Shot, Best Photo, Best Face, HDR and Panorama. It doesn’t appear to have dual-shot, however.
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean is loaded onboard and layered with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.
The phone supports Samsung’s group play wireless music playback feature alongside S Translator, Story Album, Samsung WatchOn, S Travel, S Voice, S Health, Samsung Knox and Samsung Adapt Display and Adapt Sound.
Simon Stanford, Samsung’s UK vice president of mobile, said: ‘Demand for the Galaxy S4 has been phenomenal since it launched in April and we hope to build on this success with the Galaxy S4 Mini. This new handset is the ideal smartphone companion for anyone who wants a compact device packed with innovation.’
