Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom could feature 10x ‘optical’ lens

Is Samsung readying the Galaxy S4 Zoom with 16-megapixel camera and 10x zoom?

Samsung is said to be working on a Galaxy S4 Mini variant called the Galaxy S4 Zoom. It’s said to have a lower spec than the Galaxy S4 flagship but a 16-megapixel camera.

New information from a Russian tech site suggests the Zoom name isn’t just a reference to the beefed up imaging components generally, however, as it’s been claimed the phone will sport a 10x optical zoom lens.

It is difficult to see how this will work however, optical zoom lenses are chunky motherhubbards with compact digital cameras sporting 10x units typically being about 20mm thick rather than the preferred thickness of your average smartphone, being more in the realm of 10mm .

It is possible to replicate optical zoom with ‘lossless’ zoom as Nokia did with the 808 PureView, but that was because of the high resolution 41-megapixel sensor with oversampling and even then the 808 was a hefty piece of kit.

It’s possible, of course, that Samsung’s been busying itself with developing more advance camera tech we’re not yet aware of. Camera tech is increasingly becoming a major feature of new smartphones with both HTC and Nokia investing significantly in advanced imaging capabilities to provide their phones with clear USPs.

The Galaxy S4 Zoom is rumoured to have a 4.3-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, 8GB of onboard storage, microSD capability, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and is expected to appear in June. Around the same time Samsung is also said to be launching the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy S4 Activ. The Activ is thought to be a ruggedised version of the Galaxy S4 with lower specs and a bright orange colour.
