As part of a WWDC session with developers, Apple outlined its work on MFi (Apple’s iOS peripheral standard) which includes frameworks for gaming controllers and the company announced collaborative efforts with Logitech and Moga to create certified controllers.
Logitech and Moga’s controllers will reportedly be arriving this Autumn with Apple specifically citing both device makers in presentation slides. Their controllers are apparently being made for the iPhone specifically. According to reports Apple has been actively encouraging devs at WWDC to create games to work with third-party MFi controllers.
Logitech had a prototype on show at the event and Apple showcased multiple reference designs include Bluetooth LE controllers and one which would actually attach to iOS devices and feature an additional display. The designs universally featured a D-Pad, four action buttons, dual analogue sticks and shoulder triggers – so fairly standard console stuff then.
This is fairly exciting stuff. For gaming accessories Logitech is pretty much this writer’s go-to manufacturer so it seems like a sensible partner for Apple to pick. It also opens up possibilities with regard to what Rich keeps going on about – the idea that Apple will turn the Apple TV box into a console experience by adding controllers to it and opening up the ecosystem to game developers. That would indeed be an interesting move.
