Global Smartphone Distribution Visualized By Twitter Data

twitter visualization Beautiful, isn’t it? Mapbox has used 3 billion tweets from all over the world since September 2011 (and a whole lot of smarts) to create a visualization of the world by Twitter use. Better yet, Twitter data sent by smartphones by default incorporates metadata which helps to identify whether the phone that is tweeting is either an Android, iPhone or Blackberry. Using this data, Mapbox has created a Twitter visualization of the world that can also be used to determine the general distribution of smartphones in any given area in the whole world.

Of course, this data isn’t perfect; obviously this only takes into account people that tweet or use Twitter, among other things. It does however demonstrate the “economic stratification” of some areas, and of course from the above screenshot, shows the widespread dominance of the iPhone in America. Don’t be alarmed Android fans, the green is there, just slightly obscured by the masses of iPhones (who undoubtably tweet incessantly).

It is definitely a cool way to represent the world as we known it, especially through something like Twitter, and it’s always fun to go to your hometown on the world map and see what phone type is predominant. Of course, no article here at AndroidSPIN would be complete without this:

twitter visualization That of course is the Android distribution in the U.S. of A; I was going to show the distribution in my beloved Australia, but I’m almost embarrassed by how it looks. If you want to take a look at some of Mapbox’s other visualizations, of which there are a few, hit the source links to have a look at them and the world Twitter visualization map.
