Soon, you may be able to unlock your phone with the most unusual face you can pull. Google has filed a patent that will allow the face unlock on Android phones to use facial gestures instead of your password. This of course improves the security of the current Face Unlock, and indeed most facial password systems, as these can be fooled quite easily.
The patent says it will be able to achieve this by comparing two pictures taken of the user to determine if a gesture has been made, as well as detailing several mechanisms to see through people just using photos to trick the system. Actions that could be used as a passphrase include a frown, eyebrow movement or even sticking out your tongue.
While this new patent represents a system with better security than its predecessors, there will probably be a loophole in it, as there always has been with all facial recognition technology. Until the day our phones can properly recognize us by our face, these password systems will most likely remain a nice gimmick.
What’s your opinion on facial password technology like this? Would you trust it? Let us know what you think in the comments.
