Apple has revealed its update plan for iOS 7 on its existing range of devices and it seems that while a fairly broad range of its hardware will get the new look not all of them will get the full experience.
According to a report from Techcrunch, only the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch will get the fully-loaded iOS 7 update which includes not only the visual overhaul but all the extra bolted-on features too.
Apple’s much-celebrated AirDrop feature will only arrive on the iPad 4, iPad Mini, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch.
The iPhone 4 and all the iPads will be missing out on panoramic camera capture and the iPhone 4S will join them in being left out on in-camera filters. The iPad 2 will not even be able to apply filters to existing photos, or feature swipe to capture.
Thankfully, most devices except the iPhone 4 and below will be getting Siri enhancements and the whole lot will be getting iTunes Radio, which as the report points out is the ‘only feature announced today that makes Apple money.’ Quite.
In addition, the iPhone 3GS, first-gen iPad and older devices will be left behind in iOS 6, but this is to be expected.
Indeed it’s difficult to avoid this kind of fragmentation between older hardware and new, and it’s commendable in the first place that Apple rolls out its software to so many older devices. In most cases it’s likely support isn’t there on certain devices for certain features because the hardware simply won’t support it.
