Speaking to Korea Times, LG said: ‘we have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible display from the fourth quarter of this year.’
According to the report, LG Electronics will be using said displays to launch the first smartphones with flexible screen tech and it aims to have these ready by the end of the year.
It’s been thought by analysts for some time that the first devices with flexible displays will not introduce malleable form-factor phones but simply use the technology, which is highly impact resistant, as a thinner, lighter and more durable equivalent to reinforced glass such as Dragontrail Glass and Corning’s Gorilla Glass.
LG also outlined that it will sell the flexible screen tech to other manufacturers, so it will not exclusively produce smartphones using them. Other phone makers will have a chance to get in on the action, meaning we could see devices from the likes of Samsung and HTC in the first half of 2014.
A previous concern amongst industry watchers regarding flexible OLED tech was that it would break from the increasingly high resolutions we’re seeing on existing devices. Despite offering increased durability it was thought there would be a drop in picture quality.
As it turns out that might not be the case after all, LG Display said the flexible OLED panels will support ‘ultra high-definition’ resolutions (UHD), also referred to as 4K or Ultra HD.
Analysts have also predicted flexible OLED may offer more innovative form-factors while still maintaining a rigid chassis. Handsets with wraparound touchscreens are one such implementation.
We’ll be sure to bring you more information on this front as it emerges.
