Microsoft’s Build 2013 conference has kicked off already and very early on in the opening keynote company CEO Steve Ballmer made it clear that 7-inch Windows 8.1 tablets are very ‘important’ to the company. He said we would be seeing much more about smaller Windows 8.1 devices later in the show.

Ballmer also revealed attending developers would be given an 8-inch Acer Iconia Windows 8.1 tablet at the event, so expect to see more info about this very soon indeed.
Microsoft’s chief said the company sees the smaller form factor as ‘important’ and a development which ‘had to happen’. He explained how the devices could not be described as a PC, but are a very useful form factor for students and still supported keyboard input.
During a showcase of new Windows 8.1 features, Microsoft has already shown how the on-screen touch-keyboard has already been enhanced with smaller device in mind, featuring quick gesture controls for easy switching between letters, numbers and symbols.
