Specs have leaked online for the Moto X smartphone, Motorola’s much-anticipated flagship. However, some may be disappointed as the hardware line-up isn’t as impressive as many were hoping.
- Android Key Lime Pie 5.0 release date pegged for October
- Motorola 'Moto X' gets official, summer release date confirmed
The leak comes via reputable Twitter source @evleaks and reiterates a previously seen (and somewhat disappointing) 720p display resolution. There’s nothing wrong with 720p, of course, but on a flagship it’s a little lacking especially considering the glut of Full HD 1080p devices on offer from rival manufacturers.
Other less-than-impressive specs include a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (MSM8960) and 16GB of onboard storage. The device will reportedly sport a 10-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megpaixel secondary.
Again, all of these specs are fine but not what we’re used to from flagship models.
There is one key point to consider in all of this, however, as a previous report suggests Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie will see Android being more carefully optimised to lower-spec hardware. This could be seen as Google lining up with rival platforms, such as iOS, BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone, which largely run on lower-end hardware than their Android equivalents and do a perfectly good job of it too.
It’s probably no coincidence that the supposed launch of Android 5.0 and its lower-end requirements is pegged as October, the time of Android’s fifth birthday and also when, according to some, the Moto X is tipped to arrive, although others say summer.
According to Motorla’s CEO Dennis Woodside the Moto X will feature some pretty advanced capabilities as he claimed it would be ‘contextually aware’ not just of your location but whether you’re in a vehicle and whether the device is in your hand or pocket.
Speaking at a conference, Woodside also said he had the phone in his pocket but wouldn’t show it to the crowds – if it’s that far along a launch by the end of the year seems likely.
