Pictures have leaked online showing the Nokia EOS PureView cameraphone fabricated from aluminium.
Previously it was rumoured the device would be made from the lightweight metal in order to reduce weight compared to the rather bulky polycarbonate Lumia 920. However, recent leaked shots have suggested the handset is actually made from polycarbonate, just like the Lumia 920.
Sources of the leak suggest this metallic build is just a prototype model which may not have made the final cut, however, we would point out that leaks of the ‘plastic’ model we’ve seen have described it as having a ‘cool and metallic’ finish, suggesting that this may actually be the material for the final build.
‘Not sure if it is actually metal or whether its a premium polycarbonate plastic’ said Vizileaks in an earlier report.
The new metallic leak comes courtesy of WMPU and we can also see the camera housing is made from metal. Unlike previous leaks, which showed the camera housing saying ‘XX Megapixel’ this one says 41-megapixel as we’ve seen on the Nokia 808 Symbian device.
So what’s afoot here? Well either the Nokia EOS is made from aluminium after all, perhaps with some slightly plasticky paint on top giving the illusion of polycarbonate, or this is simply a prototype and the real deal will be polycarbonate again.
A big factor could be whether aluminium does make a significant difference to weight. Nokia may have found that it doesn’t, polycarbonate is quite light too, after all, and the Lumia 920, with less complex camera tech, was a weighty beast primarily because of the onboard camera hardware more than the bodyshell. We can’t imagine that using aluminium would make that much of a difference this time round.
We won’t have long to wait to find out, however, as Nokia has scheduled a launch event on July 11 for what many believe will be the Nokia EOS as the company’s invitations allege it will reinvent camera zoom.
