Nokia may be the first to bring quad-core processors to Windows Phone with its next-generation Lumia line.
According to techtastic, which unearthed a set of developer pages from Nokia’s websites, there are references to the Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU) and both the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8274 and MSM8974 chips. The MSM8274 chip is a Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip that can be clocked up to speeds of 2.3GHz and comes bundled with the Adreno 330 GPU. The MSM8974 variant includes LTE-Advanced support.

Previously we saw reports that indicated Nokia had a device in testing which uses a Snapdragon 400 quad-core chip, utilising Cortex-A7 cores rather than the Qualcomm 800’s Krait 400 (Cortex-A15 based) setup. The Snapdragon 400 carries an Adreno 305 GPU but doesn’t sport 4G LTE connectivity.
Microsoft previously revealed that GDR3, the next update of Windows Phone 8, will support quad-core processors and Full HD 1080p displays. We’ve yet to see any leaks detailing a 1080p display-equipped Windows Phone 8 handset, Nokia or otherwise. The leaked Snapdragon 400 handset had a 720p screen, but these new Qualcomm 800 details only mention the processor.
There has been a rumour surrounding the Nokia EOS, Nokia’s forthcoming Windows Phone 8 41-megpixel PureView cameraphone, suggesting the device will launch with a dual-core chip but may be followed by a quad-core variant. We’re not too sure about this one though.
Nokia’s next launch event is taking place in New York on July 11 and we’ll be keeping you posted with more info as we get it.
