Nokia reveals September 19 event – 1080p quad-core Lumia flagship incoming?

Nokia is hosting an event on September 19. Could this be the first 1080p quad-core powered Windows Phone 8 handset?

Nokia has posted details of an event on its official Facebook page which will take place on September 19.

While the post doesn’t reveal a location, eagle-eyed bloggers at Nokiapoweruser have noted that a Nokia Lumia device shown in the included photo has the event scheduled on the calendar app, dubbed ‘Being awesome!’ and taking place from 12.00 noon.

The nearby weather app shows a location as Stockholm, which isn’t conclusive evidence by any means but it’s the best lead we’ve got at the moment.

We already know Nokia has an event lined up in New York for July 11 where it has teased it will ‘redefine’ phone camera zoom and there are ’41 million’ reasons to be interested – all of which pretty conclusively points towards the much-rumoured and much-leaked Nokia EOS, the first Lumia Windows Phone to carry Nokia’s 41-megapixel PureView camera tech.

So what does that leave for September 19? Well, it’s thought the Nokia EOS will carry similar specs to the existing Lumia 920 and Lumia 925, that is, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a 720p display.

It’s known that Microsoft’s next big Windows Phone update will include support for quad-core processors and 1080p Full HD display resolutions and what’s more several leaks from Nokia and Qualcomm have shown the company is actively working on implementing quad-core Snapdragon chips – even the high-end Snapdragon 800.

We think that means we’ll see a quad-core Lumia flagship emerging on September 19 packing a Full HD 1080p touch display.

Quite what form it will take is anybody’s guess – another 8.7-megapixel PureView camera as with the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925? Another 41-megapixel PureView, perhaps thinner than the Nokia EOS? Or, if rumours are to be believed, a Nokia Lumia-branded Windows Phone 8 ‘phablet’ with a 5-inch+ 1080p display?

On the subject of phablets that sector of the mobile space is certainly heating up with regards to competition.

Samsung is believed to be launching its Galaxy Note 3 successor model at IFA 2013 in September while Sony is thought to have its Xperia ZU 6.44-inch device ready for either this month (June 25) or next (July 4), depending on which of the two events it will turn up at that the company already has scheduled.

Needless to say we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for more word of another Nokia device pegged for later in the year. In the meantime we’re highly anticipating the Nokia EOS so stay tuned for July 11.
