Samsung has kicked off its live Galaxy and Ativ event at Earls Court in London with a hands-on display of its Galaxy S4 Active, perhaps the worst kept secret in the smartphone world. The device, which promises to keep up with even the most outgoing of users, was given its bow by the Gadget Show’s Jason Bradbury, who wasted no time immersing the device in a tank of water, before plucking it out again to snap photographs of the assembled press.
The device has been gradually outed via a series of links in recent weeks, but we now know exactly what this hard-wearing variant of the Galaxy S4 has to offer. The device will be driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset, which is made up of a 1.9GHz Krait CPU and Adreno 320 CPU, and it will also feature a 5-inch TFT screen running at 1080 x 1920 with a pixel density of 441PPI, an 8-megapixel primary camera, 2-megapixel secondary and 2GB RAM, as well as 16GB of on-board storage and the option to add a micro SD card.
Naturally, the selling point of the S4 Active is its life-proofing, which extends to the aforementioned water resistance, protecting the smartphone for 30 minutes in up to 1 metre of water, and dust resistance, and it will also play nice with gloves, so if you’re a biker, snowboarder, or any other sort of outdoorsy type this could well be the phone for you.
The device’s photographic chops look to be well thought out too. Its 8-megapixel primary shooter comes equipped with LED flash and all of the usual trimmings, such as HDR and face and smile detection, but it also includes what Samsung calls Aqua Mode, a feature which will help you snap some top-quality underwater shots.
The Android 4.2.2 powered Galaxy S4 Active is expected to go on sale later in the summer in a number of difference colour options, so start saving your pennies.
