Sony has revealed the Xperia M – a mid-range handset with NFC and a slick design

Sony has officially unveiled its latest addition to the already sizeable Xperia range with the Xperia M, a mid-range device with a 4-inch display and dual-core processor.

A quick glance at the handset and you can see it follows the same design language we’ve seen on the Xperia Z flagship and a few others such as the Xperia XR and Xperia SP.

It’s angular, thin (9.5mm) and lightweight (124g), with Sony’s silver trim and that distinctive new circular power button. There’s also an LED light indicator as we’ve seen on previous Sony models, although here it’s rather more subtly implemented and we must say it looks all the better for it – far better than the Xperia SP’s weird little ‘carry handle’.

Specs wise that processor is a now virtually ubiquitous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 model, specifically a dual-core S4 ‘Plus’ clocked at 1GHz with an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit and 1GB of RAM.

Not one to neglect the camera, even on a mid-range phone, Sony’s fitted the Xperia M with a 5-megapixel Exmor RS sensor with 720p video capture, while the front-facing secondary is a 0.3-megapixel setup for rudimentary video calling.

Onboard storage is a mere 4GB but this is expandable via microSD with cards up to 32GB supported. The phone doesn’t have 4G capabilities but does support 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC – it’ll come with bundled-in sharing apps to enable wireless data transfer between devices.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is loaded onto the handset, along with Sony’s own UI while the 4-inch display is an LCD with an 854x480 pixel resolution at 245 pixels-per-inch. There’s none of Sony’s fancy OptiContrast or Bravia tech here though.

Currently there’s no word on pricing or availability other than a broad bracket of ‘Q3’ and it’ll come in a variety of colours including black, white, purple and what’s being called ‘lime’ but which actually looks more like ‘hazmat yellow’ to us.

We expect this one to come in with quite an affordable price tag on it, we’ll keep you posted with more details as they emerge.
