Following on from the announcement by Google of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition and the HTC One Nexus Edition, a rumour has appeared suggesting that Sony may also be joining the club with an Xperia Z Nexus Edition.
According to Android Geeks’ anonymous ‘Sony insider’ the phone will be announced in July, though a specific date wasn’t given. As with the other announced Nexus Edition flagships it’s expected it’ll be sold SIM-free directly through Google Play.

It’s worth noting that Sony has already released an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) build of stock Android for the Xperia Z, but as it said at launch, the build is really designed for developers and may have a few foibles that are no exactly consumer friendly. Launching a Nexus Edition Xperia Z means Sony and Google can deliver a much tidier stock Android experience to the masses.
On top of this, a Sony Xperia Z Nexus Edition would also receive Android updates directly from Google as soon as they roll out, whereas the AOSP is a bit more ‘as and when’ Sony’s engineers get round to it – they’ve got other stuff to do after all and it really is more of a side project.
As with the other Nexus Edition devices, the hardware will be exactly the same as the regular branded flagship. For the Xperia Z that means a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit (GPU).
The camera is a 13-megapixel Exmor RS back-illuminated sensor (BSI) with LED flash and 1080p video capture while the display is a 5-inch LCD with a 1920x1080 pixel Full HD resolution at 440 pixels-per-inch (ppi). There’s 16GB of onboard storage and microSD support, as well as 4G connectivity, NFC and MHL TV-Out. The Xperia Z is IP57 certified, meaning it’s water and dust resistant and waterproof to a depth of 1 metre.
