Today, Francophiles everywhere celebrate Bastille Day, France’s national holiday. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a fortress-prison in the center of Paris that represented royal authority. The Bastille’s fall was a catalyst for the French Revolution.

Bastille Day festivities include a fireworks display at the Tour Eiffel and Europe’s oldest and largest military parade in Europe held on the Champs-Élysées.
