Pictures have emerged showing a Nokia Windows RT tablet previously rumoured to be in development, however, the images come with the news that the 10-inch slate has been cancelled.
It’s not all bad news though, according to The Verge’s ‘sources familiar with the project’ development has continued on a version running full-fat Windows 8 and presumably an Intel chip instead of the Nvidia Tegra 3 ARM-based hardware the original model was said to be using. Will we see the same device with a processor and software re-jig?
The pictures emerged via Korean tech forums and revealed the device to be a 10-inch tablet with HDMI, USB and SIM ports and 4G connectivity. The poster said they received the device as a gift from ‘someone who works at Nokia’ and it carries a model number ‘Nvidia P1001’.
Frankly we’re a little surprised Nokia’s gone for the larger scale what with 7-inch slates being currently in vogue, Microsoft’s new Windows updates supporting smaller form-factors and Nokia’s focus up until now being on smaller smartphones likely translating a bit more readily to something ‘handier’.
Furthermore, does Nokia really need to enter the tablet space? It hasn’t exactly got its Lumia smartphone brand flying high at the moment and Microsoft has plenty of OEMs churning out all sorts of Windows-based slates and hybrids with a wide range of innovative form factors. Nokia’s Windows RT tab was rumoured to come with a keyboard dock loaded with an additional battery pack and some innovative fast-charging feature but we’ve seen nothing of this so far.
