HTC One S Qualcomm S4 version may get Android 4.2 after all

News Paul Briden 10:03, 18 Jul 2013

HTC may update the Qualcomm S4 processor version of the HTC One S with Android 4.2

The HTC One S may be getting the Android 4.2 update despite HTC having previously announced it would not support new versions of Android for the device.

The news comes via reputable Twitter source LlabTooFer, which channelled Futurama’s Professor Farnsworth to announce the ‘Good news everyone!’

LlabTooFer says HTC will update the One S ‘Ville’, which is the Snapdragon S4-equipped variant. It will receive Android 4.2.2 and HTC Sense 5.0. Although there’s no word about the Snapdragon S3 model so it would appear, at least for now, that it is being left out in the cold due to technical difficulties.

HTC originally launched the One S using the Snapdragon S4 dual-core chipset but then issued a new variant based on the older Snapdragon S3, allegedly due to supply issues. For the most part the Snapdragon S3 model is region specific to Taiwan, India and Eastern Europe, but in the UK both variants are available with slightly different packaging.

While LlabTooFer has presented reliable information in the past, no indication is given for where this new information comes from, so we don’t actually know what HTC’s official stance is at present. We’ve been in touch with HTC to confirm or deny the news and are awaiting an official statement. We’ll be sure to update you with a response when we get it.

Previously HTC announced it would not be updating the HTC One S to Android 4.2 or with the new Sense 5 UI, but angry users have since created a petition via change.org, which now sits at 7,300 signatures. Is HTC about to pull a U-Turn due to customer demand?
