Apple’s iPhone 5S could be getting a delay from its expected launch this Autumn because the company is switching to a bigger display, reports claim.
It’s a bit of a tough one to believe, but according to BrightWire’s sources from the Asian supply network the display on the iPhone 5S will be expanded from the same 4-inches as the iPhone 5 to 4.3-inches. The report says Apple ‘halted processor production for the iPhone 5S in May,’ to initiate the switch. The story is also being reported by Bloomberg, which cites Taiwanese newspaper Commercial Times.
Apple CEO Tim Cook had previously hinted that the company’s 2013 product portfolio would be announced in Autumn with many expecting the iPhone 5S to be the first to make an appearance around September. Apple’s cheaper iPhone model, the iPhone Light, is also due to arrive within a similar timeframe.
The iPhone 5S’s aluminium bodyshell has repeatedly leaked in recent weeks, but it’s not clear whether this is for the 4-inch display model allegedly canned in May or the newer 4.3-inch version. There’s also no indication of exactly how far back the screen swap might push the launch. We would expect it to be a substantial delay as it doesn’t seem likely a larger panel can be incorporated without going back more-or-less to the drawing board.
That sort of thing makes us think this report might be a load of cobblers as, given the flak Apple has come under from analysts and investors in recent months it’s going to be painfully aware that it needs to get a new flagship out sharpish.
With that said, larger displays are increasingly becoming the norm in the wider smartphone market and the iPhone’s 4-inch screen is looking a little sheepish by comparison. The success of larger, Full HD 1080p displays suggests this is what the majority of consumers at large are after.
