Office supplies retailer Staples has slashed the price of the Nexus 7 in its US stores suggesting that a new version could soon be with us

Office supplies retailer Staples has slashed the price of the Google Nexus 7 to $179 (£120) in its US stores, sparking speculation that a new model could soon be released.

The news comes via PhoneArena which reports that the price cut could signal stockists attempts to clear existing units in readiness for a new variant of the low-cost, high-spec, Asus-produced 7-inch tab.

Staples is currently offering the 16GB and 32GB versions of the tablet for $179 and $199 respectively, a significant reduction from the $199 and $249 pricetags still currently offered on the Google Play Store.

Other US retailers are said to have made reductions on this product in recent weeks, adding weight to building speculation that an update is nigh.

A revamped Google Nexus 7 is rumoured to feature a Full 1080p HD display with a resolution of 1980x1200. If true, this would give the Nexus 7 revamp the sharpest tablet display on the market at 330 pixels-per-inch (ppi). The slate is also said to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chip, although recent leaks have also suggested it could have a Qualcomm 600 quad-core chip instead. Some of these details emerged along with a release date of July coming from a leaked transcript of an online chat between a customer and an Asus support agent.

Nothing solid has materialised as of yet with regards to either specs or a potential launch date but the price slashing beginning in earnest certainly suggests that the prospective July release could still be on the cards.

We'll bring you more news as and when we get it.
