Unlucky for some, but exactly what the Doctor ordered for Sony Xperia Ultra fans - the handset is due to become available in the UK on September 13, Know Your Mobile has learned.
UK retailer Expansys, which already has the 6.44-inch Qualcomm Snapdragon 800-powered behemoth on pre-order for £639 SIM-free, revealed to us that it will be receiving stock on September 13. That’s the word from the ‘official UK supplier’ too, according to a spokesperson. The handset is listed in both black and white colour variants for the same price.
This should mean that other retailers and UK networks should also be receiving stock around the same time.
The Xperia Z Ultra has a huge 6.44-inch Triluminos touch display which can accept stylus input from most third-party styluses, but if you’re caught short a pencil or pen will work equally well.
It has a 1920x1080 pixel Full HD resolution at 344 pixels-per-inch (ppi) for some very sharp visual quality while the Triluminos technology and Sony X-Reality Engine ensure rich colours and good brightness and contrast.
Sony has given the handset plenty of power thanks to the use of Qualcomm’s latest quad-core chip, a Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2GHz with an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU) and 2GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of onboard storage plus microSD support for cards up to 64GB. A 3,050mAh battery pack should give plenty of running time on a single charge and you’ve got a wide range of connectivity options including 4G LTE, HSPA+ 3G, MHL TV Out, Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi.
The operating system is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean layered with a custom build of Sony's UI, tailored to the Xperia Z Ultra's large screen real-estate. You get extra icon rows for app shortcuts and it's all been optimised to look as good as possible.
An 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera sits on the back panel complete with autofocus and touch focus, digital stabilisation, HDR, 1080p video and panoramic capture. There’s also a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary.
As well as having a stylish, 6.5mm thin chassis clad with glass front and rear panels, the Xperia Z Ultra has IP58 water and dust resistance certification and is waterproof up to a depth of one metre.
