The iPhone 5S may be available at a reduced price when you trade in your iPhone 5.
MacRumors spoke to Apple store employees who are being trained for the new program's roll out.
9to5Mac said pilot schemes are in operation at Apple's Dallas and Texas stores.
The iPhone Reuse and Recycle Program will start with older iPhone models on August 30, and on a bigger scale throughout September, when the iPhone 5S is due to be announced.
Apple will process the traded-in devices using Brightstar, who will then recycle the devices within the country of trade-in, rather than emerging markets as was previously rumoured.
9to5Mac says, 'The iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 are eligible for both the trade-in and recycling aspects of the program. The program will be supported in the United States first, and it could reach international markets in the future.'
At present, trade-in prices are slated as $279 (£180) for an unlocked iPhone 5 16GB and between $120 (£80) and $140 (£90) for an unlocked 8GB iPhone 4.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the last earnings call that trade ins were going to become an option. 'I see channels doing it, and I like the environmental aspect of it, and so that part of it really is encouraging to me,' he said.
