HTC has officially announced the latest addition to its smartphone catalogue, the mid-range HTC Desire 500.
At first glance the handset bears more than a passing resemblance to HTC’s older One range, such as the HTC One S and HTC One X, and it has a more rounded-off appearance than the company’s newer HTC One and HTC One Mini designs.
But the HTC Desire 500 does share plenty of features with its higher-end cousins, namely HTC’s most recent interface revamp which includes HTC Sense 5 and the BlinkFeed homescreen, where you’ll get a tile-based feed of news, photos and social networking.
On the hardware front there’s a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3-inch LCD touch display with an 800x480 pixel resolution at around 216 pixels-per-inch (ppi). Meanwhile the primary camera features an f/2.0 aperture and is rated at 8-megapixels. A 1.6-megapixel front-facing secondary takes care of video calls.
The phone also features ‘Video Highlights’ which aggregates a day’s worth of still images and video footage and creates a 30-second showreel. In terms of storage space you’ve got 4GB onboard but there’s also microSD support for cards up to 64GB. The battery pack is a 1,800mAh unit.
HTC says the Desire 500 will arrive in August but is yet to reveal a precise launch date or price, but the company does describe it as ‘mid-range’, which will likely mean it’ll be cheaper than the HTC One Mini’s £380 price tag. The HTC Desire 500 will come in two colour choices – Lacquer Black and Glacier Blue, with the blue model being mostly white with a bit of blue trim.
We’ll bring you more information on a launch date and pricing as it becomes available.
