Details have emerged of a mobile-based tracking device from HTC which is already going up for pre-order. The HTC Fetch is a small square dongle which can be attached to a keyfob or stuck into a bag or briefcase and allows you to keep track of your valuable item with your phone.
The HTC Fetch pairs with a smartphone, such as the forthcoming HTC One Max, via Bluetooth and if it moves more than 15 metres away from the paired handset you’ll get a sound notification. When this happens, the device will also ping the last known location of both the smartphone and the HTC Fetch tagged item to your Google Maps.
Handily, you can also use the associated smartphone app to trigger the audible alert on the HTC Fetch, which should help you find the item if you know it’s nearby but don’t know exactly where it is – the classic missing house keys scenario.
There’s also a button the HTC Fetch fob itself which lets you remotely activate the phone’s camer. This is apparently so that you can remotely access the captured image via a web portal and see where your smartphone is if you’ve misplaced it, although we can imagine this also has other uses.
This handy gadgetry can also be had for a fairly low price tag as pre-order listings show it at £29.99 on UK web retailer Clove, although it’s not yet clear exactly when the HTC Fetch will arrive. We’ll be keeping an eye on this for more info soon and hopefully will be able to give the device a field test in the not-too-distant future too.
