Another set of pictures has leaked showing the iPhone 5S chassis and its component parts, however, the new snaps reiterate the idea that the forthcoming iPhone model will carry a fingerprint scanner housed in its Home button.
The images emerged via prominent French tech leak source Nowhereelse.fr and primarily show the handset’s back panel. As with previous leaks, the back panel and overall design of the iPhone 5S appears to have changed very little from the iPhone 5 but the positioning of certain internal features on the inside of the case suggests there’s some jiggery-pokery going on with the hardware.
What’s gained most attention is the fact that Apple has added a metal ‘spacer cushion’ to the area around the Home button and there’s a good deal more space been made around it for all the clever bits that could well be needed to operate a fingerprint scanner.
Evidence has been steadily increasing over time to suggest Apple will include a fingerprint scanner in a forthcoming iPhone handset, although until now there has been little to directly imply the iPhone 5S would be the device to debut the technology. Apple acquired fingerprint scanning expert AuthenTec for $356 million and followed that up with a job posting for an engineer to focus on such technology.
There was also some code left in the iOS 7 beta which strongly hinted at such a feature. Industry analysts believe Apple may well be looking to introduce extensive remote payment and eWallet services made secure by fingerprint recognition.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5S at an event on September 10, but unlike previous launches where the company's flagship smartphones landed on store shelves in a matter of weeks, it's thought the iPhone 5S, possibly accompanied by the affordable iPhone 5C/iPhone Light, will be available from October 25.
