LG G2 and Moto X lead new wave of ‘stepped’ batteries

The LG G2 and Motorola Moto X are both carrying new 'stepped' batteries designed to boost use time

Two freshly announced handsets, the Motorola Moto X and LG G2, feature a new type of battery design which could become a common feature of modern smartphones and give everyone’s handset life a bit of a boost in the process.

Battery tech has remained stagnant for a while now and as smartphone processors have become more and more powerful, screens brighter and sharper, and overall smartphone features and capabilities more complex, the demand for better battery life has shot to the top of the priority list for many users.

But rather than introduce any revolutionary new battery cell tech, manufacturers have cottoned on to a simple design change. Sometimes, it seems, the simplest solutions can provide the best results. The stepped design essentially optimises some extra space often left inside the chassis by adding a little bump, which is barely a millimetre higher than the rest of the unit.

Although the bump is only small vertically, it goes across the length of the battery pack and that all adds up in the end to help squeeze a decent amount of extra battery life out of the cell. It’s a bit like a camel, the hump may look a bit pointless but it’s packed full of useful stuff.

The result? Well the LG G2 is barely any larger than Samsung’s Galaxy S4 but manages to cram a 3,000mAh pack into it rather than the Samsung’s 2,600mAh cell and that’s a decent amount more in terms of actual use-time.
