Nexus 5 render imagines 32-megapixel camera

A concept render of the Nexus 5 optimistically hopes for a 32-megapixel camera and octo-core processor

A concept render has emerged portraying one fan’s interpretation of the rumoured Google Nexus 5 smartphone.

The picture, which emerged via Twitter, shows a large device with a near edge-to-edge display and lists possible specs including a rumoured 32-megapixel camera, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, a 3.2GHz octo-core processor, 8GB of RAM and a 7,000mAh battery.

Some of these specs are surely drifting into the realms of fantasy though, particularly given the svelte nature of the handset shown. Currently the Nokia Lumia 1020 has a 41-megapixel sensor but it has a massive port in the back and is quite a bulky device to boot.

Likewise, a 7,000mAh unit would add considerable heft and 8GB of RAM rarely occurs in high-end PCs let alone a mobile phone.

Similarly, at present we’re only aware of one octo-core mobile processor on the market and that’s Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa, and while it’s possible that Google could buy the chip from Sammy to drop into its next Nexus, that particular chip doesn’t clock any higher than 1.8GHz on the Cortex-A15 cores and 1.3GHz on the Corex-A7 cores. Has someone simply added those figures together perhaps?

A report which emerged via idigitaltimes.com claims we’ll see a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display panel and a 2.3GHz octo-core processor with 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and a 3,300mAh battery.

4G LTE and a set of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants have also been mentioned, although it’s all looking like salt pinching territory from where we’re standing.

The rumours go on to peg a launch in October or November, which would put the handset in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone 5S. While the slightly wacky specs leaking out are a little hard to take seriously there is a glimmer of possible truth behind the idea of an October launch, given that it’ll see Android’s fifth birthday and, if rumours are true, the launch of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

We’ve already seen the Nexus 7 2 arrive with Android 4.3 – a limited feature release, which suggests it’s a stop-gap – so many believe the major overhaul will be Key Lime Pie aboard a new LG-made smartphone flagship.
