Nokia’s Windows RT tablet could launch as early as September, according to reports.
The tablet has been rumoured for a good long while with Nokia denying its involvement in such a project and some reports previously suggesting it was cancelled, but recently new evidence has emerged suggesting the Nokia slate is in fact a reality.
The rumours implied a 10.1-inch tablet running Windows RT with a full HD 1080p display, a 1.15GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 procesor, 32GB of onboard storage and a detachable keyboard dock with a built-in battery pack and stylus pen. It’s thought there may also be a data-enabled model as murmurings suggest AT&T will carry the tablet in the US.
It was previously thought the Nokia tablet would be launched in October, with some pointing to October 17 as this is the Microsoft launch date for Windows 8.1. Now, however, The Verge’s anonymous sources have said the device will launch in New York on 26 September.
It’s also believed the project is currently codenamed ‘Vanquish’ and a new image has emerged via Chinese site Digiwo. The picture shows the back panel in red, mimicking Nokia’s colourful Lumia smartphones and bearing US network Verizon’s 4G LTE branding.
Nokia chief-executive Stephen Elop has previously been quite outspoken on his company’s interest in exploring the tablet form factor as a compliment to its smartphone devices. Previously a former Nokia designer has gone on record saying that the majority of his time with the company was spent working on a tablet device.
We’ll be keeping an eye out as September 26 approaches. Stay tuned for more.
