Samsung Galaxy S4 Active gets one off water-damage exchange?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active owners may be able to exchange their handset once in the event of water-damage

Samsung may soon offer owners of its recently launched Samsung Galaxy S4 Active water resistant smartphone the chance to exchange it for a new one in the event that water somehow makes its way inside the device.

The news comes via PhoneArena, which reports receiving an anonymous tip from someone with inside access to US network AT&T’s internal systems.

According to the report, the tipster has seen an internal menu which details the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active exchange scheme which will be operated by both AT&T and Samsung itself.

While nothing is yet confirmed, this potentially means that separate of AT&T (so for the rest of us outside the States), Samsung will be offering the exchange to owners of water-damaged Samsung Galaxy S4 Active handsets.

However, Samsung’s patience isn’t infinite, it would seem, as the offer is only good for one a one-time exchange – if you somehow get water inside your Samsung Galaxy S4 Active again after having already exchanged a water-damaged unit you won’t be able to swap it for a second time.

The source also says the exchange can only be made for a replacement Samsung Galaxy S4 Active – you can’t get another Samsung Galaxy model instead – and it only covers liquid damage, so if the phone has been otherwise bashed around it likely won’t be eligible.

The scheme means that even if the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active’s Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI), usually a component which changes colour on contact with water, shows positive you can still make an exchange.

Samsung is marketing the Samsung Galaxy Active as a phone which will stand up to wet weather and can be submerged in up to a metre of water, even allowing you to take pictures while underwater, but the IP67 certification only officially covers submersion for up to thirty minutes. It also doesn’t account for things like not having the removable back cover securely sealed before you drop it in a pool or puddle.

There have been some reports of Galaxy S4 Active handsets not lasting the full thirty minute time span and the phone’s warranty does not cover liquid damage.

Hopefully Samsung will make an official announcement soon and we can get a clearer idea of whether the scheme will operate outside the US and, if so, what the precise details are.
