This Weekend’s Hashtag Project: WHPmovingportrait

Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes & hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a photo announcing the weekend’s project every Friday.

The goal this weekend is to take subtle and beautiful moving portraits using video on Instagram. Some tips to get you started:

  • Have your subject be still, but not frozen. The beauty of these portraits comes from natural small movements like blinking, adjusting or wind in your subject’s hair.

  • Pay attention to your backdrop. Choose a single-colored or white wall for a dramatic shot or find a location that will tell a story through the background and sounds.

  • Hold your phone as still as you can (or use a tripod if possible)! It’s hard to notice small movements in a moving portrait if your frame is moving too much.

For more inspiration, check out Andy Warhol’s screen tests or these subtle portraits from Pitchfork Music Festival.

PROJECT RULES: Please only add the #WHPmovingportrait hashtag to videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own videos to the project. Any video taken then tagged over the weekend is eligible to be featured right here Monday morning!
