ZTE Open Firefox phone sells out in three days

The ZTE Open, one of the first phones launched running Mozilla's Firefox OS, has sold out within three days

The ZTE Open smartphone based on Mozilla’s Firefox OS mobile platform has sold out of its initial stock in only three days following its launch on eBay in the US and UK.

The handset was officially put up on eBay as a ‘Buy it now’ option SIM free for £59.99 in the UK and $79.99 in the US and while it’s not clear how much stock was made available – Mozilla and ZTE are keeping mum about it – the stock has cleared already.

There is a note of suspicion in such reports, however, because potentially stock may have been very low to begin with. Allegations were made when the BlackBerry Z10 first went out of stock earlier this year that retailers had a very limited number of handsets and it was claimed this was not a good indication of consumer interest.

But, there’s a good chance that the surge of interest is legit, because what ZTE and Mozilla are offering is an incredibly affordable handset thanks to the fact Firefox OS has been optimised to run as a full-blown smartphone platform on cheaper hardware. The handset has a 3.5-inch display with a 480x320 pixel resolution while a Qualcomm single-core Snapdragon S1 processor with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of storage.

We’re yet to do a full review the ZTE Open specifically, but having seen demonstrations on similarly specced phones running a pre-release version of Firefox OS at industry expos before there’s every reason to believe it can deliver a competitive smartphone experience despite its low price point, and that’s sure to appeal to the money conscious buyer who still wants touchscreen interaction and apps.
