Pictures of what looks like a Nexus 4 allegedly running Android 4.4 KitKat have leaked online, potentially giving us the first glimpse of Google’s latest operating system build.
The snaps come via 9to5Google and there is already some discussion about whether the images are the real deal or fakes with Androidpolice penning a substantial article arguing the latter.
While the device info page showing version 4.4 and the baseband number does seem compelling at first, it’s not outside the realms of possibility that these elements could’ve been doctored. Some have even suggested we’re looking at a custom ParanoidAndroid ROM theme.
If, however, they are real, then what they show us is that Google is embracing colours more and pulling in elements from its other software.
Status bar icons are now grey while the interfaces of individual apps are colour-coded in a similar fashion to Google Play – what’s more, this extends to the status bar, which now changes colour to match the app rather than staying black.
The messages app appears to have some connection with Google+ and possibly Hangouts (formerly Google Talk) as the Google+ mascot, Mr Jingles, a bell with a face, makes an appearance. So far we’ve only seen the phone dialler and messages apps but they appear to have been extensively overhauled aesthetically, however, there are still no clues to enhanced functionality.
What do you think readers - are these snaps of Google’s new Android 4.4 KitKat UI genuine? If so, do you like Google’s changes? Let us know in the comments below.
