Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 5C, is a bit of a move away from the norm for the mobile device maker, with its plastic build and bright colour choices.
But is there more to Apple’s changes than meets the eye?
I’m starting to get a suspicion that Apple is aiming to tap into a rich vein of nostalgia in order to generate more sales, as the iPhone 5C keeps reminding me of things from my childhood.
Duplo blocks
Before graduating to the older kid’s world of Lego, there was Duplo. The big, chunky and brightly coloured blocks use a similar feeling shiny plastic to Apple’s iPhone 5C. In some ways they’re a bit better though, because you can’t build a house out of iPhones.
Tetris
The handheld device of choice way back when was Nintendo’s GameBoy. The one I had came with a free copy of Tetris and I spent many a happy hour in the back of the car stacking the brightly coloured shapes while making myself feel a bit sick.
Sweets
Likely another contributing reason for vehicular-based nausea, a bewildering array of bright, shiny and colourful sugary treats.
Rubiks Cube
Again, shiny plastic and bright primary colours on a must-have toy.
The 80’s generally
Luminescent visors, shell suits, weird TV, all of these things have that distinctive colour palette which goes hand-in-hand with the decade that brought us Miami Vice.
